Walgreens Joins Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Drug Program

Medicare beneficiaries across the United States are gaining broader access to GLP-1 weight loss medications. Walgreens announced its participation in the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, effective July 1. The pharmacy chain will support eligible patients across roughly 8,000 store locations nationwide.

This move marks a significant step toward making GLP-1 drugs more accessible for seniors. More than 56 million patients in the Medicare network may qualify for the program, according to a June 25 news release.

What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is a federal initiative designed to provide temporary GLP-1 obesity drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched this Bridge as a transitional solution. It runs through December 2027.

Why Does the Bridge Exist?

CMS created the Bridge after its longer-term coverage plan stalled. The Better Approaches to Lifestyle and Nutrition for Comprehensive hEalth (BALANCE) model aimed to move GLP-1 obesity coverage permanently into Medicare Part D. However, insufficient participation led CMS to pause that model indefinitely. The Bridge now fills that gap while policymakers plan next steps.

The program reflects a growing recognition that obesity is a chronic condition. GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide have shown strong clinical results. Yet many Medicare patients could not previously afford them without coverage.

Walgreens Brings Access to 8,000 Pharmacies

Starting July 1, Walgreens pharmacists will actively assist Medicare patients navigating the new program. Their role goes beyond simply dispensing medication.

What Walgreens Pharmacists Will Do

Walgreens pharmacists will help patients in three key areas:

  • Eligibility checks: They will guide patients through qualification requirements so no eligible beneficiary is left behind.
  • Medication questions: Pharmacists will answer detailed questions about covered GLP-1 drugs and dosing options.
  • Ongoing treatment support: Patients receive continued pharmacist guidance throughout their treatment course.

Additionally, Walgreens offers free home delivery in most states for select oral GLP-1 tablets. This removes a practical barrier for seniors with limited mobility or transportation.

Who Qualifies for GLP-1 Coverage?

The program targets Medicare beneficiaries who meet specific clinical and administrative criteria. Over 56 million patients fall under the Medicare umbrella, though individual eligibility depends on medical history and diagnosis. Patients should speak directly with a Walgreens pharmacist or their primary care provider to confirm their status.

Which Medications Are Covered?

The Bridge program covers select GLP-1 medications approved for obesity treatment. Oral tablet formulations are included for delivery-eligible patients. Patients and prescribers should verify their specific drug is on the approved list before initiating treatment.

Other Pharmacy Giants Now on Board

Walgreens does not stand alone in supporting the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Three other major pharmacy and retail chains have also committed to the initiative.

CVS Health

CVS brings a comprehensive support package to its Medicare GLP-1 patients. It offers expanded pharmacist consultations, a $49 MinuteClinic virtual weight management visit, and a $50 monthly copay option for qualifying beneficiaries. This makes CVS a strong option for patients seeking clinical guidance alongside medication access.

Walmart and Sam’s Club

Walmart and Sam’s Club together operate nearly 5,000 pharmacy locations across the country. Both will provide pharmacist consultations and educational resources to help Medicare patients understand their new GLP-1 benefits. Their combined footprint ensures rural and suburban patients are not excluded.

Together, these four pharmacy networks create a broad national infrastructure for Medicare GLP-1 access.

Why CMS Extended the Bridge Program

The Bridge program exists because the BALANCE model did not attract enough participation. CMS paused that initiative indefinitely rather than allow a coverage gap to emerge for Medicare patients seeking GLP-1 obesity treatment.

By extending the Bridge through December 2027, CMS gives the healthcare system time to develop a durable, long-term solution. Furthermore, it ensures that patients who began GLP-1 treatment under existing coverage can continue without interruption.

This decision also signals a shift in federal policy. Obesity treatment is increasingly treated as medically necessary, not elective. Therefore, sustained coverage discussions will likely continue into 2027 and beyond.

What This Means for Medicare Patients

For the 56 million Medicare beneficiaries who may be eligible, the practical impact is clear. First, they gain access to GLP-1 drugs at major pharmacy chains they already use. Second, they receive pharmacist support to navigate what can be a complex process. Third, in many states, they can access medications through free home delivery.

Key Takeaways for Health Plan Executives

Payer executives and health plan leaders should take note. The expansion of GLP-1 coverage under Medicare has cost and utilization implications. As more beneficiaries access these medications, health plans must plan for claims volume changes, prior authorization workflows, and member communication strategies.

The Becker’s 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, set for November 2–3 in Chicago, will address these topics. Value-based care, regulatory changes, and cost management strategies will all be on the agenda.
