NHS Accelerates AI to Cut Waiting Times

NHS

The NHS AI investment of £10 billion is accelerating the introduction of artificial intelligence across England as part of a major push to cut waiting times. The programme forms part of the government’s long-term plan for the NHS and is expected to deliver significant improvements in how patients access care, while reducing administrative pressures on frontline staff. Officials estimate the changes driven by this NHS AI investment could generate around £41 billion in benefits over the next decade.

NHS AI Investment Brings Triage to the NHS App

One of the biggest developments funded by this NHS AI investment is the rollout of a new AI-powered triage tool within the NHS App. Following a successful trial, the system will be made available to more than 200,000 patients over the next year, before expanding to all NHS App users by April 2028.

How the AI Triage Tool Works

The tool asks patients tailored questions about their symptoms, adapting as they respond to build a clearer picture of their condition. It then directs them to the most appropriate service — whether that’s a GP, pharmacy, A&E, community healthcare or self-care advice. Where appropriate, the information is also passed to clinicians to help prioritise treatment. Traditional methods of contacting GP practices will remain available alongside this NHS AI investment tool.

Early Results From a Sussex Trial

A trial at a GP practice in Sussex showed the technology reduced telephone queues by almost a third, helping ease pressure during the busy morning rush while maintaining patient satisfaction — an early sign of what this NHS AI investment could achieve at scale.

NHS AI Investment Reduces Clinical Paperwork

The NHS AI investment is also expanding the use of AI-powered note-taking technology that records conversations between clinicians and patients, then automatically produces clinical notes and summaries. Initially, the technology will be introduced in hospital outpatient appointments, where it has already demonstrated clear benefits.

More Time With Patients, Fewer Minutes on Notes

Research found that the tools allow clinicians to spend nearly a quarter more time with patients by reducing the paperwork completed during and after appointments. Trials have also shown emergency department staff can save around 47 minutes per shift, allowing many clinicians to treat an additional patient during each working day. The technology is now being introduced across several NHS trusts, while other major hospital groups expand successful pilots to thousands more healthcare professionals.

New Digital Services Backed by the NHS AI Investment

Alongside AI tools, the NHS AI investment will fund a range of new digital services designed to make healthcare more accessible. Patients will eventually be able to join specialist clinicians’ online appointments through a new virtual hospital service called NHS Online. The NHS App will also allow people to request follow-up appointments after treatment and access approved digital rehabilitation programmes for common heart and lung conditions.

A Single Patient Record and Stronger Cybersecurity

Plans also include creating a Single Patient Record to give healthcare professionals a more complete view of an individual’s medical history, improving coordination between different parts of the NHS. Additional digital systems will help staff manage urgent and planned care more efficiently, while strengthening cybersecurity to protect patient information under this broader NHS AI investment.

Microsoft Copilot Joins the NHS AI Investment Rollout

More than 500,000 NHS staff will also receive access to Microsoft Copilot as part of the NHS AI investment, after trials showed it could save workers an average of two days of administrative work each month. This addition reflects how broadly the investment spans beyond clinical tools into everyday administrative support.

What the NHS Hopes to Achieve

The NHS says the investment is focused on technologies that can deliver practical improvements for both patients and staff. By reducing administrative burdens, improving access to the right services and expanding digital healthcare options, the organisation hopes this NHS AI investment will shorten waiting times, make better use of clinical resources and create a more efficient health service for the future.
