Healthcare Innovation Winners Deliver Powerful Real-World Results

Healthcare

The healthcare innovation winners recognized in the 2026 Healthcare Innovation Innovator Awards demonstrate that meaningful transformation does not always require a massive technology overhaul. ACURE4Moms, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center and the Southern Nevada Department of Veterans Affairs were selected for projects addressing maternal health disparities, surgical cancellations and workforce training. What connects the three initiatives is their focus on clearly defined problems, practical implementation and measurable improvement rather than technology for technology’s sake.

The annual awards have recognized hospitals, health systems, medical groups, health information exchanges, government agencies and other healthcare organizations since 2009. The program emphasizes projects that have moved beyond promising ideas to demonstrate tangible improvements in healthcare delivery.

Healthcare Innovation Winners Target Real Problems

The three winning projects operate in very different areas of healthcare.

ACURE4Moms combines health information exchange, analytics, community-based doula support and evidence-based interventions to address maternal and infant health disparities.

Cuyuna Regional Medical Center developed a nurse-led, EHR-integrated preoperative optimization process.

Meanwhile, the Southern Nevada VA adopted artificial intelligence, virtual reality and immersive learning to transform workforce education.

Together, they illustrate an increasingly important principle: Innovation creates value when technology is embedded within a redesigned care or operational process.

Healthcare Innovation Winners Connect Data With Care

ACURE4Moms—Accountability for Care through Undoing Racism and Equity for Moms—is a North Carolina initiative focused on improving pregnancy outcomes, patient experience and communication, particularly for Black mothers.

The study uses two major interventions. One provides clinics with patient data, alerts and accountability tools intended to identify disparities and support improvements in care. The second connects eligible patients with community-based doulas who can provide support during pregnancy and childbirth.

The project is structured as a cluster randomized trial involving 39 prenatal practices across North Carolina, including private practices, academic centers, health-system clinics and community health centers.

Its approach is notable because technology is only one component.

Data and electronic alerts identify potential gaps, while community-based professionals address communication, support and access. This combination recognizes that healthcare disparities cannot necessarily be solved by software alone.

Rural Hospital Reduces Surgical Cancellations

Cuyuna Regional Medical Center addressed a more operational problem: patients arriving for joint replacement surgery without being adequately prepared.

The rural Minnesota Critical Access Hospital implemented a nurse-led preoperative optimization program integrated with its electronic health record.

Healthcare Innovation reported that the initiative reduced same-day joint replacement cancellations from 9% to 2% while improving patient readiness and operating room efficiency.

A cancelled procedure can affect much more than one patient. Operating room capacity has already been reserved, clinical staff have been scheduled and patients may have arranged transportation, work leave and family support.

Preventing avoidable cancellations therefore has both patient-experience and operational benefits.

Healthcare Innovation Winners Redesign Workflow

The Cuyuna project demonstrates why workflow redesign is often more valuable than simply adding another digital application.

By integrating the process with the EHR and assigning nurses a structured role before surgery, the organization could identify readiness problems earlier.

That allows teams to intervene before patients reach the operating room.

This model could also be relevant beyond joint replacement. Similar preoperative pathways may help health systems identify incomplete tests, medication issues, medical optimization needs or other barriers before scheduled procedures.

The broader lesson is that EHR technology generates greater value when it triggers an actionable clinical workflow rather than merely storing additional information.

Southern Nevada VA Reinvents Workforce Training

The Southern Nevada VA approached healthcare innovation from another direction: workforce education.

Its project combines AI-powered virtual patients, virtual reality and immersive learning environments to help healthcare workers practice complex situations while remaining at their work locations. Healthcare Innovation highlighted reductions in training costs alongside improvements in staff knowledge, confidence and preparedness.

Traditional healthcare training can require instructors, physical simulation spaces, travel, equipment and time away from clinical duties.

Digital simulation can potentially make some training scenarios repeatable and scalable while giving staff opportunities to practice difficult situations without putting real patients at risk.

AI Expands Healthcare Simulation

AI can make simulated patients more responsive than traditional predetermined scenarios.

Instead of following a rigid sequence, an AI-enabled virtual patient may react dynamically to questions or decisions, creating a more realistic learning environment.

Virtual reality can add environmental context, allowing healthcare workers to practice communication, clinical assessments or challenging situations within immersive scenarios.

However, healthcare organizations still need strong oversight. Training content must reflect current clinical standards, AI-generated responses require validation and outcomes should be measured rather than assuming immersive technology automatically improves performance.

Practical Innovation Creates Measurable Value

The 2026 winners demonstrate three different ways to create healthcare value.

ACURE4Moms connects information technology with community support to address maternal health disparities. Cuyuna uses an EHR-enabled workflow to reduce avoidable surgical cancellations. Southern Nevada VA applies AI and immersive technology to improve workforce training.

None of these projects treats technology as the final objective.

That approach aligns with the broader principle behind healthcare delivery innovation. The CMS Innovation Center similarly evaluates new payment and service-delivery models based on their ability to improve patient care, promote higher-quality services and support more effective healthcare delivery.

For other health systems, the projects provide a useful framework: identify a specific problem, redesign the workflow, select technology that supports the new process and measure whether outcomes actually improve.

The healthcare innovation winners of 2026 show that successful transformation can emerge from maternal health programs, rural surgical workflows or workforce education. What matters most is not how futuristic the technology appears, but whether the solution solves a real healthcare problem and produces results that other organizations can learn from.
