Instacart and DoorDash, two prominent home delivery services, have innovated their platforms, enabling customers to leverage Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for procuring health and wellness items. In light of the prevailing cold and flu season, these initiatives aim to simplify the process of purchasing health-related products using health benefits. Instacart introduces an HSA and FSA shop within its app, while DoorDash offers a dedicated Health section, ensuring easy access and payment convenience. These enhancements address challenges users encounter in utilizing their HSAs and FSAs, facilitating swift access to essential health products during this critical period.

As the cold and flu season takes hold, major home delivery platforms like Instacart and DoorDash have introduced a novel feature, allowing users to purchase health and wellness items using their health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs).

Recently, both Instacart and DoorDash made announcements signaling their acceptance of payments from HSAs and FSAs to cover the costs of health-related purchases. This initiative, particularly highlighted by Instacart, aims to facilitate users in maximizing their FSAs, which usually expire at the end of each year.

Utilizing HSA or FSA cards for in-store purchases might pose challenges for some individuals. Instacart’s latest integration aims to streamline this process, permitting HSA and FSA payments for eligible items across all retailers available on their app.

To simplify the shopping experience, Instacart is launching a dedicated HSA and FSA shop within its app, providing users with easy access. Furthermore, the platform will introduce tags on products, clearly indicating those eligible for FSA or HSA payments.

Sarah Mastrorocco, Vice President and General Manager of Health at Instacart, mentioned in a blog post, “Customers will be able to easily shop from eligible products—like acne face wash and high-quality sunscreen from a beauty retailer, or allergy medication, tampons, and cold medicine from a local grocer or pharmacy—and use their FSA or HSA payment card at checkout for same-day delivery in as fast as an hour.”

Beyond integrating FSA and HSA payments, Instacart is introducing the Health Wallet tool. This feature will enable users to access supplemental benefits from Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans, as well as funds from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Meanwhile, DoorDash’s approach mirrors Instacart’s strategy. Customers on DoorDash can access a dedicated Health section for “sick day essentials,” with items eligible for FSA or HSA payments distinctly labeled. Additionally, DoorDash is implementing discounts on selected items and offering free delivery on eligible orders, aligning with the preparations for the flu season.

Users will have the option to add their FSA or HSA cards as payment methods within the DoorDash app, allowing them to shop from a selection of 15 retailers.

Fuad Hannon, Vice President of New Verticals at DoorDash, emphasized, “With the launch of HSA and FSA payments on DoorDash, consumers can now get the essential health and wellness items they need, when they need them, and in a way that makes financial sense for them. As part of our mission to empower local economies, we’re always working to broaden access for consumers in ways that break down barriers.”

These initiatives from Instacart and DoorDash not only simplify the purchasing process for health and wellness items but also address the challenges users face when accessing and using their HSAs and FSAs for timely, essential health-related purchases during the flu season.
