As corona is waning from the planet, healthcare payers are witnessing a significant increase in their MLRs.Medical loss ratios are up for leading payers in the health insurance industry, meaning more revenue is going toward members’ claims. Here’s how 6 payers’ medical loss ratios shifted this quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. UnitedHealth Group:<\/em><\/strong> This year Q3 revenue reveals an 83 percent MLR which has hiked up from 81.9 percent in 2020. Revenues Increased 11% to $72.3 Billion, with Strong and Diversified Growth across Optum and UnitedHealthcare. \u201cOur positive growth and operating results are thanks to the 340,000 Optum and UnitedHealthcare team members who strive every day to help clinicians deliver and people access quality, affordable health care,\u201d said Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group.<\/li>
  2. Anthem:<\/em><\/strong> Q3 reports provide the stats of 87.7 percent MLR which is up from 86.8 percent in 2020. “The strong growth we saw across all of our benefits business in the third quarter demonstrates that our core offerings, as well as additional innovative products and services, continue to resonate in the market. We believe the momentum we are seeing and our ability to deliver on our strategy will be further accelerated by recent changes in our leadership\u201d, said Gail Boudreaux, President and CEO<\/li>
  3. Cigna: <\/em><\/strong>Total revenues for third quarter 2021 were $44.3 billion. Adjusted revenues1 were $44.3 billion and reflect strong contributions from each of Cigna’s ongoing businesses. This year it has 84.4 percent MLR which is up from 82.6 percent in 2020.\u201cOur strong results from the quarter demonstrate how we are advancing our growth strategy and delivering for our customers, patients, clients, and provider partners,\u201d said David M. Cordani, president and chief executive officer.<\/li>
  4. Centene:<\/em><\/strong> Total revenues of $32.4 billion for the third quarter of 2021, representing 11% growth compared to the third quarter of 2020. MLR increased to 88\/1% which is more than 86.4 percent in 2020. Humana on the other hand said it had a net income of $11.84. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $4.83 per share. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $4.61 per share. It has an 87.1 percent MLR which is up from 82.6 percent in 2020<\/li>
  5. Aetna:<\/em><\/strong> Its MLR increased from 84% in 2020 to 85.8 %. Chief Financial Officer Shawn Guertin said on the company\u2019s earnings call that Covid inpatient admissions to the hospital in August and September matched the peak levels that CVS saw in January 2021.
