{"id":6554,"date":"2022-10-20T06:26:35","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T06:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/?p=6554"},"modified":"2022-10-21T06:00:33","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T06:00:33","slug":"centene-takes-center-stage-in-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/centene-takes-center-stage-in-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Centene Takes Center Stage in Georgia Midterms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the midterm elections loom, Centene has been caught in the middle of the Georgia campaigns for governor and attorney general because of the company&#8217;s political donations and its legal settlements with states for allegedly overbilling Medicaid programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Georgia, Centene&#8217;s Peach State Health Plan provides Medicaid coverage to about 1 million individuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, the company has paid out at least $489 million to settle allegations it overbilled state Medicaid programs for pharmacy services.\u00a0Kaiser <a href=\"https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/health-care-service-corporation-to-acquire-trustmark-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health News<\/a>\u00a0reported Oct. 18 that Centene is currently working to settle billing issues with nine states, including Georgia. The company has already\u00a0agreed\u00a0to settle with 13 additional states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2021 SEC&nbsp;report, Centene created a $1.25 billion reserve fund to pay for these settlements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/54.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/54.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/54-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/54-768x351.jpg 768w, https:\/\/distilinfo.com\/healthplan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/54-150x69.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>KHN<\/em>&nbsp;also reported that incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has received more than $100,000 from Centene, its subsidiaries or employees since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Oct. 18, the&nbsp;Atlanta Journal-Constitution&nbsp;reported that Centene has donated more than $70,000 to the campaign of incumbent Republican Attorney General Chris Carr. According to&nbsp;<em>KHN<\/em>, $10,000 came directly from CEO Sarah London and $6,000 from the company&#8217;s general counsel, Chris Koster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Carr, will you continue to put your personal interest and the interest of your corporate donors ahead of the people in Georgia?&#8221; Mr. Carr&#8217;s opponent, Democratic state Sen.
