Duke Health and Microsoft join forces in a five-year partnership to explore generative AI and cloud technology’s potential for improving healthcare. They establish the Duke Health AI Innovation Lab and Center of Excellence, aiming for responsible and ethical AI and cloud technology deployment. In a significant step towards advancing digital healthcare, Duke Health and Microsoft have joined forces in a five-year partnership to explore the potential of generative AI and cloud technology to enhance healthcare services. As part of this collaboration, they will establish the Duke Health AI Innovation Lab and Center of Excellence, which will focus on the responsible and ethical deployment of AI and cloud technology.<\/p>\n

Under this partnership, Microsoft will provide training to Duke Health to develop a skilled IT workforce well-versed in cloud technologies and assist in building a secure cloud environment. In turn, Duke Health will leverage Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform for clinical care, research, education, and promoting health equity.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jeffrey Ferranti, the senior vice president, and chief digital officer of Duke Health, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, calling it a milestone in the evolution of digital healthcare. He highlighted the synergistic combination of Duke Health’s expertise in data science, patient care, and technology innovation with Microsoft’s cutting-edge healthcare solutions and AI technology. Together, they aim to position Duke Health at the forefront of digitally-focused health systems while ensuring a thorough study of the reliability and safety of generative AI in healthcare applications.<\/p>\n

This collaboration comes amidst a larger trend in the industry. Recently, Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, and AI safety and research company Anthropic teamed up to establish the Frontier Model Forum, dedicated to the responsible development of large-scale machine learning models that surpass current AI capabilities.<\/p>\n

Similarly, in June, Stanford Medicine and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence introduced Responsible AI for Safe and Equitable Health (RAISE-Health), an initiative aimed at addressing ethical and safety concerns related to AI innovation, convening industry experts, and setting industry standards.<\/p>\n
