Why Doula Support Matters Now
UnitedHealthcare has announced a nationwide expansion of its doula offering, now available to people enrolled in eligible employer-sponsored health plans. This move aims to improve maternal and infant health outcomes across the country. Moreover, it gives millions of working Americans access to non-clinical emotional, physical, and educational support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
The U.S. Maternal Health Crisis
The United States holds the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries. Alarmingly, most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. These statistics highlight a critical gap in the care system — one that doula support can help close. Research confirms that doula services reduce preterm births, lower cesarean delivery rates, and increase breastfeeding rates. Furthermore, studies show a 57% decrease in postpartum anxiety and depression among individuals with access to doula care.
“We believe that everyone deserves meaningful support through their maternity journey,” said Rebecca Madsen, Chief Executive Officer of Advocacy, Behavioral and Clinical for UnitedHealthcare. “Expanding doula access may help give more people personalized, whole-person support.”
What Doulas Do for Expecting Families
A Dedicated Support Companion
Doulas serve as advocates and dedicated companions throughout the maternity experience. Their focus centers on guiding the birthing parent while also addressing the needs of the newborn. Specifically, their role includes:
- Preparing families for labor with hands-on education and emotional reassurance
- Offering guidance during delivery and recovery to reduce fear and promote confidence
- Supporting coordination of newborn care in the days and weeks after birth
Notably, doulas differ from clinical providers. They fill the human support gap that medical professionals often cannot address due to time and role constraints. As a result, families receive more holistic, continuous care throughout one of life’s most significant transitions.
Who Can Access This Benefit
Phased Rollout Across Employer Groups
UnitedHealthcare rolls out Doula Support in phases. Currently, the benefit is available nationwide to eligible employer-sponsored health plans. Throughout 2026, access will expand to additional employer groups. By January 1, 2027, approximately 7.2 million members may have access to the offering — provided it is part of their employer’s health plan. Across UnitedHealthcare’s employer-sponsored plans, the company records approximately 220,000 deliveries each year, underscoring the scale of this initiative.
How to Check Eligibility
Members can check their eligibility by downloading the UnitedHealthcare app or visiting myuhc.com. Additionally, HR departments at participating employer groups can confirm whether Doula Support is included in their specific plan offering.
Flexible Options for Every Member
Meeting Families Where They Are
One of the strongest aspects of this program is its flexibility. Members can meet with a doula in person or connect virtually when in-person access is unavailable. Depending on their plan, members may receive coverage for a set number of doula visits or a reimbursement allowance for services rendered.
Choose Your Own Timeline
Members also choose when to use Doula Support. They can access the benefit during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, or any combination of the three. In most cases, members select from a broad network of trained doulas, regardless of network affiliation. This flexibility ensures that geographic location does not become a barrier to meaningful maternal support.
UnitedHealthcare’s Commitment to Maternal Health
Investing in Long-Term Change
This expansion builds on UnitedHealth Group’s broader commitment to maternal and infant health. Recently, the United Health Foundation announced $7 million in maternal and infant health grants. Of that total, $1 million supports strengthening and diversifying the doula workforce itself — a critical step toward sustaining this kind of care at scale.
A Scalable Model for the Future
By integrating doula support into employer-sponsored plans, UnitedHealthcare creates a scalable model that employers, members, and healthcare advocates can build upon. Doula access has historically been limited to those who can afford it out-of-pocket. Therefore, embedding it within insurance coverage represents a meaningful shift in how the healthcare system values non-clinical care.
As awareness grows and more employers opt in, this initiative has the potential to reshape standard maternity care in the United States — reducing preventable deaths, closing equity gaps, and empowering families with the support they deserve.
