Midjourney, the AI art service, has introduced new features that allow users to create panoramic images and add a touch of strangeness to their generated artwork. The panoramic feature lets users extend images in different directions, while the “weirdness” parameter adds eccentricity to the generated images. These additions aim to encourage creators to experiment with unique visuals, offering a distinct look in the realm of AI-generated content.
Midjourney, the AI-powered art service, has introduced two new features that offer users the ability to create “weirder” and more expansive images.
With the upcoming release of version 6 scheduled for the end of July, Midjourney has been rapidly rolling out new features. In the meantime, users have been delighted with the creative additions available in version 5.2.
One of the latest additions to Midjourney is the ability to generate panoramic images. When an image is upscaled to its full resolution, users can now pan the image in different directions—left, right, up, or down. This feature effectively expands the image in the chosen direction, with the AI seamlessly filling in the resulting space.
For instance, I recently requested Midjourney to create a 16:9 image of a car driving down a highway. After choosing the option to pan the image to the right, the resulting image is extended horizontally.
It is worth noting that the images can be further expanded beyond a single iteration, although widening the aspect ratio excessively may cause some issues.
Moreover, users can leverage Midjourney’s Remix mode to modify the prompt while extending the image, enabling them to create captivating panoramic photo stories.

Midjourney’s panoramic feature is a swift response to the Firefly AI tools recently integrated into the beta version of Adobe’s Photoshop software. Among its numerous capabilities, Firefly allows users to extend the canvas, with the generative AI effectively filling in the resulting space.
The second new feature introduces an intriguing element of eccentricity to the generated images.
Users now can adjust the “weirdness” parameter in their image prompts, ranging from 0 to 3,000. The higher the value, the more peculiar and unconventional the resulting images become.
To exemplify, consider the following image of “hungry schoolchildren” with the weirdness turned up to the maximum setting of 3,000.
The weirdness parameter can also be combined with other styles. For instance, I requested an image of a boy surrounded by aliens in the distinctive style of Stanley Kubrick, with both the stylized and weirdness parameters set to 700 (Midjourney suggests using equal values for parameter combinations).
While the resemblance to a still from a Stanley Kubrick movie can be debated, one thing is certain—Midjourney encourages creators to explore diverse image types and prompts, aiming to generate pictures with a unique visual aesthetic rather than contributing to the sea of indistinguishable AI-generated content.
