Georgia has appointed Cheryl Gardner as the director of the state’s newly-created ACA exchange, Georgia Access. Gardner has extensive experience in healthcare reform, having previously served as the CEO of New Mexico’s state-run exchange, the executive director of Arkansas’ health insurance marketplace, and the director of policy and strategy for the Utah health exchange. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed legislation establishing a state-based ACA exchange on May 2, and the proposal is pending approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The creation of Georgia Access is a significant step forward for the state’s healthcare system and will provide Georgians with a marketplace to shop for health insurance plans that meet their needs and budget.

“Georgia has proven it is on the cutting edge of healthcare reform and I’m proud to bring my unique background in overseeing and advising healthcare exchanges across the country to Georgia Access,” Gardner said in a news release.
Gardner’s appointment comes as Georgia is one of several states that are considering creating their own ACA exchanges. The Trump administration has been supportive of state-based exchanges and has rolled back some of the federal requirements that were put in place under the Obama administration.
