Robert Wieland, M.D., assumes immediate leadership as CEO of Allina Health Aetna. A former Chief Medical Officer, Wieland will drive growth, strategy, and innovation for the collaborative health plan that merges Allina Health’s local network with Aetna’s national expertise. His extensive experience includes executive roles at Allina Health, and he holds a medical degree from the University of Minnesota. The transition is set to enhance the delivery of accessible, connected healthcare and innovative insurance products to members.
Robert Wieland, M.D., has been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer of Allina Health Aetna, stepping into the role with immediate effect.
Formerly serving as the health plan’s Chief Medical Officer, Wieland brings his wealth of experience to the collaborative health plan, which was established in 2018 through the partnership of Minnesota-based Allina Health’s facilities and expansive provider network with Aetna’s nationwide reach and expertise in benefits design.
In his new capacity, Wieland will spearhead the company’s endeavors for growth and innovation. Additionally, he will play a pivotal role in defining the strategic direction for its commercial and Medicare Advantage offerings, as highlighted in the official announcement.
Ric Magnuson, Chief Financial Officer of Allina Health and Chairperson of the Allina Health Aetna board of directors commended Wieland’s role in the company’s executive leadership team since its inception. Magnuson remarked, “Bob Wieland has been an integral part of Allina Health Aetna’s executive leadership team since the organization’s inception in 2018. Bob’s leadership experience in the Twin Cities in both the health system and payer industries will further our mission to bring affordable and differentiated health care services to the community.”
Before joining the health plan, Wieland held the position of Allina Health’s Chief Strategy Officer, where he played a pivotal role in driving business development and technology integration efforts. His tenure at Allina Health also encompassed various other executive responsibilities.
Wieland attained his medical degree from the University of Minnesota.
