Recently Humana expanded its dimension with multiple acquisitions and purchases. The coronavirus pushed more senior care into the home, boosting business for Louisville, Kentucky-based health insurance giant. In-home care has become a rising business priority for Humana because managing chronic conditions and coordinating care at home is cheaper and potentially safer than having patients stay in acute-care hospitals.
- Effective Acquisitions: Acquisition reflects Humana’s continued commitment to investing in home-based clinical solutions that drive improved patient outcomes, increased satisfaction for patients and providers and value for health plan partners. Fully integrating home health allows Humana to accelerate clinical innovation and the introduction of a value-based operating model at scale, more closely aligning incentives to focus on improving patient outcomes and reducing the total cost of care.
- Purchase of private firms: In July 2018, Humana and private equity firms TPG Capital and Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe completed their acquisition of Louisville, Ky.-based post-acute care provider Kindred Healthcare for $4.1 billion, with Humana owning 40 percent of the company. Humana announced April 27 it would purchase the remaining 60 percent of Kindred from the equity firms in a $5.7 billion deal expected to close in the third quarter of this year. The transaction includes the company’s 43,000 employees across 40 states.
- DispatchHealth: Humana announced its partnership with an in-home medical provider DispatchHealth. At the time of the announcement, DispatchHealth, which launched in 2013, had offered 24/7 home-medical services to 220,000 patients in 29 cities. DispatchHealth offers an array of services, including imaging, lab, ultrasound, and administration of IV fluids and sutures or staples.
- OneHome: Humana announced recently it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Florida and Texas-based One Homecare Solutions. The acquisition will further advance Humana’s strategy to build a value-based home health offering. OneHome is a provider of a variety of home-based services, as well as a convener of home health services stakeholders and a care and risk manager.
- Reinforcement of home care model: “We believe consumer demand for high-quality home-based care models will continue to increase,” Humana CEO and President Bruce Broussard. “And COVID has reinforced this belief as we see increased awareness and interest in home-based care models by consumers.”
