Fortune recently reported that UnitedHealth Group gets the second most “return on leadership” among the top 100 companies on the Fortune 500 list. Here are the executives that make up that leadership team, according to UnitedHealth Group’s.
Andrew Witty, CEO: Mr. Witty has served as UnitedHealth Group’s CEO since February 2021. Before that, he was vice president of UnitedHealthGroup and CEO of its Optum arm. Mr. Witty took an unpaid leave of absence between April and December 2020 to serve as a special envoy at the World Health Organization, co-leading efforts to accelerate response to COVID-19.
John Rex, executive vice president and CFO: Mr. Rex was appointed to his current role in 2016. He previously served as Optum’s executive vice president and CFO.
Dirk McMahon, president and COO: Mr. McMahon was appointed to his current role in February 2021. He was named UnitedHealthcare CEO in June 2019. Prior to that, he served as Optum’s president and COO.
Cory Alexander, strategic adviser: As a strategic adviser, Mr. Alexander provides advice and perspective on the company’s external, societal and political environment. He previously served as the company’s executive vice president for corporate affairs.
Rupert Bondy, executive vice president and chief legal officer: Mr. Bondy joined UnitedHealth Group in March. He previously served as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for Reckitt, a consumer goods group focused on hygiene, health and nutrition products.
Terry Clark, executive vice president and chief marketing officer: Mr. Clark has served as UnitedHealth Group’s chief marketing officer since 2014. This year he added chief marketing and customer officer for Optum to his responsibilities. He previously served as the chief marketing officer for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement.
Patricia Lewis, executive vice president and chief sustainability officer: Ms. Lewis was named UnitedHealthGroup’s chief sustainability officer in February. In that role, she leads the development and strategy of environmental sustainability goals, as well as health equity and diversity, equity and inclusion commitments and initiatives. Ms. Lewis previously served as the company’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer.
Richard Mattera, senior vice president and chief development officer: Mr. Mattera has served in his current role since 2020. He previously served as Optum’s chief legal officer and has led the merger and acquisition legal function at UnitedHealth Group for almost a decade.
Erin McSweeney, executive vice president and chief people officer: Ms. McSweeney has served as chief people officer since March. In that role she develops and implements the company’s enterprise people and culture strategy and strengthens leadership alignment. She previously was Optum’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer.
Richard Migliori, MD, executive vice president and senior adviser: Dr. Migliori works on strategic initiatives that accelerate the company’s growth priorities and advance client partnerships.
Tom Roos, senior vice president and chief accounting officer: Mr. Roos joined the company in 2015 and is responsible for U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, accounting policy, tax and enterprise risk management.
Dan Schumacher, UnitedHealth Group chief strategy and growth officer/Optum Insight CEO: Mr. Schumacher has served as UnitedHealth Group’s chief strategy and growth officer since April 2021. He took on the added role of Optum Insight CEO in April. Previously, he served as Optum’s president and COO.
Jennifer Smoter, senior vice president and chief communications officer: Ms. Smoter joined UnitedHealth Group in March 2021 and was previously the vice president of external affairs and communications at Intellia Therapeutics, a biotech startup.
Zack Sopcak, senior vice president: Mr. Sopack was named the company’s vice president for capital market communications and investor relations in March. He joined the company in 2019 as vice president of investor relations. He was previously Morgan Stanley’s lead analyst for managed care organizations and healthcare facilities.
Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare CEO: Mr. Thompson was named UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in April 2021. He was previously CEO of UnitedHealthcare government programs and Medicare & retirement businesses.
Margaret-Mary Wislon, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer: Dr. Wilson was named to her current role in December 2021. She joined UnitedHealth Group in 2008 and most recently served as associate chief medical officer before attaining her current title.
