Optum Rx is partnering with community pharmacies to address healthcare disparities in rural and underserved areas. Their Pharmacy & Provider Desert Program, launching in fall 2023, will connect Optum Rx members in underserved regions to healthcare services through local pharmacies. They also plan to launch programs for connecting individuals with diabetes and pregnant women to social resources, as well as a maternal and fetal health program. This initiative follows a similar program by Express Scripts to enhance reimbursements and cover preventive care provided by pharmacists in rural areas.
Optum Rx is embarking on a new initiative to address healthcare gaps in rural and underserved communities by partnering with community pharmacies. The Pharmacy & Provider Desert Program, set to launch in fall 2023, aims to connect Optum Rx members in regions with limited healthcare providers to essential healthcare services through local pharmacies. This program not only benefits patients but also recognizes the clinical expertise and unique capabilities of the community and independent pharmacy partners, as stated by Heather Cianfrocco, CEO of Optum Rx.
In addition, Optum Rx will introduce a program in June that utilizes community pharmacies to connect individuals with diabetes and pregnant women to social resources. Initially launching in several states, including North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Texas, and Louisiana, the program will expand nationally by fall 2023. Furthermore, Optum Rx plans to unveil a maternal and fetal health program in July.
This move follows a similar program launched by Express Scripts in April, which aimed to increase reimbursements for rural pharmacies and cover routine preventive care provided by pharmacists.
