In 2024, UnitedHealthcare is expanding its individual exchange plans to include Wisconsin, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Carolina. The company will also continue offering Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchange plans in 22 other states. This expansion follows a strategic shift after scaling back its ACA presence in 2017 due to losses, marking a determined return to the ACA market.
UnitedHealthcare is set to broaden its individual plan coverage to include four new states in 2024. Specifically, the company will be introducing individual exchange plans in Wisconsin, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Carolina for the upcoming year.
In addition to this expansion, UnitedHealthcare will maintain its presence in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchange market by continuing to offer plans in 22 other states. This information was communicated to providers through a message on October 1.
This move marks the latest step in UnitedHealthcare’s strategy to increase its ACA presence, which had been significantly scaled back in 2017 due to substantial losses. In 2016, the company was present on 33 state exchanges, but this number had dwindled to just two states by 2018. However, with the addition of these new states in 2023 and now in 2024, UnitedHealthcare is demonstrating its commitment to re-establishing a stronger presence in the ACA market.
