Apple CEO Tim Cook dropped a few hints about the production of the much-awaited Apple Car, with the self-governing vehicle technology. The so-called Project Titan, appeared in the news in the year 2019, as on the brink of failing but the CEO had confirmed that the project was alive and well with maneuverings to make the self-driving electric passenger car by 2024.
- Cook told on the “Sway” podcast, “ The autonomy itself is a core technology, in my view. If you sort of step back, the car, in a lot of ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. And so there are lots of things you can do with autonomy. And we will see what Apple does”.
- The news of the death of the Apple car was perhaps overstated. Apple’s so-called Project Titan, which last year demoted the team by some 200 people, is not only above but on the edge of planning a “breakthrough battery technology” and automated vehicle technology by 2024, a source was quoted saying.
- It is still unclear what the Apple car will look like, but as a passenger vehicle, rather than a robotaxi or delivery vehicle, it would be going against the likes of Tesla. “ I have never spoken to Elon, although I have great admiration and regard for the company he has built. I think Tesla has done an unbelievable job of not only establishing the lead but keeping the lead for such a long period of time in the EV space. So I have a great appreciation for them”, said Cook.
- Doug Field, who was formerly the Senior VP of engineering at Tesla is known to be leading the Project Titan and he is presently one of the key players behind the launch of Model 3.
