Lt. Gen. Mary K. Izaguirre, Surgeon General of the Army, announced these developments during the Building a Healthy Home Front forum at the Association of the United States Army’s 2025 annual meeting, emphasizing the importance of leveraging both technology and human expertise to deliver comprehensive care to service members and their families worldwide.

AI Integration for Military Healthcare Access

The Defense Health Agency is collaborating with Army leadership to effectively support mental health treatment by bringing virtual care capabilities to remote military installations and underserved areas where traditional mental health resources remain limited or completely unavailable to service members and their families.

Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Care Delivery

Lt. Gen. Izaguirre explained the strategic approach: “We’re working with our partners at the Defense Health Agency to effectively support that treatment part of the health, bringing virtual care to remote areas…(and) leveraging technology…and humans to provide care.” This balanced approach recognizes that technology serves as an enabler rather than a replacement for essential human connection in mental health treatment.

The integration of artificial intelligence serves as an intelligent entry point and triage system, efficiently directing patients toward appropriate levels of care while preserving precious human touchpoints for individuals requiring intensive therapeutic intervention. “If we can leverage AI to be that entryway, and then triage, then we can preserve those human touchpoints that need that level of care,” Lt. Gen. Izaguirre emphasized.

Virtual Therapy Sessions and Global Expansion

Since its launch three years ago, BRAVE has successfully hosted approximately 60,000 virtual therapy sessions, demonstrating substantial demand for accessible mental health services among military communities. The program currently operates at 84 locations spanning the United States, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific region, with the Defense Health Agency planning worldwide availability by the end of 2026.

Differences From Previous Virtual Platforms

DHA’s BRAVE virtual services should not be confused with My Military Health’s SilverCloud platform, which concluded operations in July 2025. SilverCloud provided confidential self-help resources for managing emotions and stress but did not offer formal behavioral health treatment requiring licensed professional intervention.

Platform Evolution and Service Improvements

The Military Health System also announced the discontinuation of MHS Video Connect in July 2025. BRAVE represents a more comprehensive, professionally-staffed alternative that delivers formal mental health treatment rather than self-guided resources alone.
