Introduction
Geisinger has appointed a seasoned insurance executive to lead its health plan into a new era. Jeremy Gaskill now serves as president of Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) and executive vice president of insurance operations for Geisinger, effective February 23, 2026. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for one of Pennsylvania’s most prominent nonprofit health systems as it navigates major shifts in government-funded healthcare programs.
Who Is Jeremy Gaskill?
Jeremy Gaskill brings over two decades of health insurance leadership to his new role. He steps into GHP’s top position after a distinguished career at Humana, one of the nation’s largest insurance carriers. Furthermore, his deep expertise in Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial health plans makes him a strong fit for Geisinger’s mission to deliver value-based care across Pennsylvania.
A Leader Built for Transformation
Gaskill has built his reputation by turning around underperforming markets. Additionally, he has led large-scale organizational transformations and consistently delivered strong results. These qualities drew Geisinger’s leadership to him as they seek to strengthen and future-proof the health plan.
“Throughout his career, Jeremy has demonstrated the ability to turn around challenged markets, lead large-scale organizational transformation and deliver sustained performance,” said Dr. Terry Gilliland, Geisinger’s president and CEO.
Two Decades of Humana Leadership
Before joining Geisinger, Gaskill spent more than 20 years at Humana. Most recently, he served as the central region president for Medicare, overseeing a nine-state territory based in Kansas City, Kansas. During this time, he managed both commercial and government business lines, including Medicare and Medicaid, across multiple regions.
Key Achievements at Humana
Gaskill’s track record at Humana speaks for itself. He expanded provider networks, improved plan performance, and managed complex multi-state operations. Moreover, his experience aligns directly with the challenges GHP faces today, particularly as payers prepare for significant policy changes affecting government-funded programs.
Leadership Transition from Karen Murphy
Gaskill succeeds Karen Murphy, who stepped into the GHP president role in March 2025. Murphy joined at a critical time and worked to stabilize the health plan’s operations. Under her leadership, GHP significantly reduced operating losses over the past year.
A Smooth Handover
Dr. Gilliland praised Murphy’s contributions during the transition. “I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Karen for her leadership in stabilizing GHP and reducing operating losses over the past year,” he said. Gaskill and Murphy will collaborate closely to ensure a seamless transfer of leadership responsibilities, minimizing disruption for GHP’s members and partners.
Gaskill’s Vision for Geisinger Health Plan
Gaskill arrives with a clear understanding of the challenges ahead. He recognizes that healthcare in the United States is at a turning point, especially for health plan payers facing policy-driven disruptions.
“This is a transformational time for healthcare in this country, particularly for payers as we prepare for major impacts from the pending changes to government-funded programs,” Gaskill said.
Building on GHP’s Legacy
Despite the challenges, Gaskill is optimistic about what GHP can achieve. He believes the health plan is well-positioned to expand its impact and deliver innovative coverage solutions for Pennsylvanians. “I believe GHP is poised to build on its legacy of providing comprehensive health insurance coverage for Pennsylvanians by offering innovative approaches for its members in the years to come,” he added.
About Geisinger and Risant Health
Founded in 1915 by philanthropist Abigail Geisinger, the organization has grown into one of Pennsylvania’s largest and most respected health systems. Today, Geisinger serves 1.2 million people in urban and rural communities across central and northeastern Pennsylvania.
The nonprofit system operates across 163 care sites, including 10 hospital campuses, and generates over $8 billion in annual revenues. Geisinger Health Plan currently serves more than half a million members through commercial and government programs.
A Part of Risant Health
In 2024, Geisinger became the first member of Risant Health, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding value-based care nationwide. This partnership further strengthens Geisinger’s commitment to delivering patient-centered, high-quality healthcare beyond Pennsylvania’s borders.
What This Means for Pennsylvania Members
For GHP’s more than 500,000 members, Gaskill’s appointment signals a commitment to stability and innovation. His experience managing large, complex health plans means he understands both the operational and human dimensions of health insurance.
Moreover, his focus on value-based care aligns with Geisinger’s broader mission. As policy changes continue to reshape the healthcare landscape, members can expect GHP to respond with thoughtful, member-first solutions that reflect decades of industry expertise.
