Mount Sinai Health System and the Guyana Ministry of Health have jointly launched a national hospital quality improvement initiative. The program aims to strengthen patient safety and advance high-quality care across Guyana’s newly constructed regional hospitals. This landmark collaboration marks a turning point in Guyana’s push toward world-class healthcare by 2030.
Overview of the Initiative
The initiative forms a key pillar of the Government of Guyana’s broader National Healthcare Initiative. This three-way collaboration involves the Government of Guyana, Mount Sinai, and Hess Corporation. Together, they are working to transform Guyana’s public health system by 2030. The goal is simple: deliver world-class services to every citizen.
Five core focus areas guide the program. These include community-centered care, digital health, cancer care, capacity building and workforce development, and women’s and children’s health. Furthermore, the initiative supports the country’s ambition to meet international hospital accreditation standards, in partnership with Joint Commission International (JCI).
The Two-Day Leadership Workshop
Bringing Hospital Leaders Together
The initiative kicked off with a two-day leadership workshop held on March 26 and 27, 2026. Clinical and administrative leaders from six newly constructed regional hospitals attended the event. Together, they collaborated with Mount Sinai experts to develop practical, evidence-based approaches for improving inpatient and emergency care quality.
Sharing International Best Practices
During the workshop, Mount Sinai representatives shared global best practices in quality improvement. Moreover, they guided hospital leaders on strengthening safety systems grounded in the highest international standards. The exchange marks a decisive shift from planning to implementation, as Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized, stating the country is moving “away from just talk to getting into action.”
Digital Transformation Driving the Effort
Electronic Health Records and E-Prescribing
In parallel with quality improvement, Guyana is advancing a comprehensive digital transformation across its health sector. The rollout of electronic health records (EHR), e-prescribing, and integrated lab and imaging systems is already underway. Pilot programmes are active in select facilities, with nationwide expansion planned.
AI Tools for Diagnostic Imaging
Additionally, artificial intelligence tools are entering the system to support diagnostic imaging interpretation. These tools help clinicians make faster, more accurate decisions. Consequently, patients receive better care without unnecessary delays. The Ministry will also deploy monitoring teams to review patient records and assess adherence to clinical protocols, ensuring continuous compliance and improvement.

Over the past four years, Guyana’s health sector has grown significantly. The country now operates approximately 450 facilities and has added 5,000 new healthcare personnel. These six newly constructed regional hospitals expand access to advanced diagnostic, surgical, and emergency services. As a result, residents no longer need to travel long distances to Georgetown for specialized care.
A Multi-Year Expansion Plan
The current initiative focuses on six new regional hospitals. However, the program will expand to cover additional regional hospitals as construction continues. This phased approach ensures that quality improvement scales alongside infrastructure growth.
