Elevance Health’s $1 Billion AI Commitment
Elevance Health is making one of the boldest AI bets in the insurance industry. President and CEO Gail Boudreaux announced a $1 billion spend across digital and AI capabilities during an April 22 earnings call. Importantly, the company treats AI as a core business driver — not an experiment.
“We’re not approaching AI as a separate technology element or experimentation,” Ms. Boudreaux said. “We’re looking at things that will scale and support those absolutely core things of our business.”
Furthermore, this announcement positions Elevance alongside UnitedHealth Group, which is spending $1.5 billion on AI in 2026. Together, these commitments signal a broader industry shift toward technology-led operations.
How the Sydney Health Virtual Assistant Works
Answering Member Questions With Less Friction
Elevance launched its virtual assistant through the Sydney Health app and affiliated plan websites. Members can ask plain-language questions about coverage, costs, and providers. As a result, members get fast answers without navigating complex call menus or paperwork.
“[The virtual assistant] is helping people get answers fast with less friction,” Ms. Boudreaux said.
Additionally, the Sydney provider-matching tool has gained strong adoption. More than 20% of eligible members actively used it. The tool draws on more than 500 data points to connect members with the right providers. This data-rich approach sets it apart from basic chatbot tools.
Commercial Members Lead Early Adoption
The assistant first launched for 22 million commercial members. These users interact with the platform regularly. Therefore, Elevance already has a large, active user base generating valuable behavioral data to improve the tool over time.
Medicare Members Embrace AI Tools
A Surprising Shift in Acceptance
Initially, many assumed older members would resist AI-powered tools. However, that assumption has proven wrong. Elevance Health Chief Growth Officer Anita Allemand, PharmD, previously told Becker’s that Medicare members have grown more accepting of AI.
As a result, Elevance planned a Medicare expansion of the virtual assistant for 2026. This move extends the tool’s reach to one of healthcare’s most complex member populations. Consequently, Medicare members gain quicker access to coverage information and provider guidance.
AI Slashes Prior Authorization Denials by 70%
Prior authorization remains a major friction point across the healthcare industry. Elevance, however, is actively solving this problem through AI. The company’s Health OS platform and related AI tools have slashed prior authorization denials by nearly 70%, according to Ms. Boudreaux.
This result reflects a broader insurer effort to cut back on and simplify prior authorization requirements. Moreover, it directly benefits providers and patients who previously faced lengthy approval delays.
Health OS Platform Connects Clinical Data
Carelon Oversees a Unified Data Layer
Carelon, Elevance’s services division, manages the Health OS platform. The platform links provider data, lab results, and pharmacy information. Therefore, clinicians gain a unified view of a patient’s health picture in real time.
This integrated approach gives providers the insight they need to make faster, better decisions. Additionally, it reduces duplication and administrative burden across the care continuum.
AI Drives Cost Management and Payment Integrity
Beyond clinical operations, AI also supports financial efficiency at Elevance. The company sees strong potential for AI in payment integrity and cost management.
“We see that as a real opportunity to manage costs,” Ms. Boudreaux said. “Right now, it’s about getting information in our hands a lot faster.”
By identifying outliers earlier, Elevance can flag unusual billing patterns and cost spikes before they escalate. Consequently, the company acts proactively rather than reacting to financial losses after the fact. This shift from reactive to predictive cost management marks a significant operational advantage.
Employees Get Internal AI Access and Certifications
60,000 Employees Now Use AI Tools
Elevance is also investing in its workforce. More than 60,000 employees now have access to internal AI tools designed to boost productivity. This broad rollout ensures that AI supports day-to-day operations across departments.
OpenAI Partnership Builds AI Literacy
In September, Elevance announced a partnership with OpenAI to offer employees AI certifications. This initiative gives staff structured, credentialed training in AI skills. As a result, the company builds internal expertise rather than relying solely on external vendors.
Together, these workforce investments ensure that Elevance’s AI strategy succeeds at both the technology and human levels.
