CommonSpirit and Cigna Settle Chattanooga Network Dispute

CommonSpirit

Thousands of patients in the Chattanooga region can finally exhale. CommonSpirit Health facilities in Tennessee and Georgia have reached a new agreement with Cigna, restoring in-network access for patients across the Chattanooga area. The resolution ends weeks of uncertainty that left many families unsure whether their coverage would hold.

What the Agreement Covers

CommonSpirit Health and Cigna have finalized a two-year agreement. It allows Cigna members in employer-sponsored Open Access and LocalPlus plans to maintain in-network access to CommonSpirit Memorial Hospitals, CommonSpirit Medical Group, and The Chattanooga Heart Institute physicians and advanced practice providers.

Locations Now Back In-Network

The agreement covers CommonSpirit facilities in Chattanooga and Hixson, Tennessee, as well as Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Patients at all three sites can now receive care without facing out-of-network penalties.

Retroactive Coverage

One of the most patient-friendly elements of this deal is its retroactive start date. The agreement is retroactively in effect as of February 1, 2026. This means coverage is treated as continuous, even for patients who received care during the negotiation gap. Cigna members can continue using CommonSpirit facilities with no disruption, according to Tennessee Partners for Health.

Why the Dispute Started

The conflict began when contract renewal talks broke down at the start of the year. CommonSpirit says Cigna rejected all proposals presented during negotiations to renew its commercial insurance contract. As a result, CommonSpirit facilities temporarily moved out of Cigna’s network on February 1, 2026.

Cigna’s Side of the Story

Cigna did not stay silent. The insurer called the situation disappointing, stating that CommonSpirit Memorial Hospital already ranked as one of the most expensive hospital systems in the region. Cigna further argued that CommonSpirit had requested significant price increases that would drive up health care costs for local businesses, employees, and families.

CommonSpirit’s Position

On the other side, CommonSpirit officials maintained that their goal throughout the process was to preserve uninterrupted, in-network access to care while securing fair and market-competitive rates. Both sides ultimately found common ground before the situation caused lasting disruption to patient care.

How Patients Benefit Now

The resolution delivers clear, immediate benefits. Patients no longer need to consider switching providers or seeking continuity-of-care exceptions. CommonSpirit says patients can continue seeing their current doctors and using the same facilities without interruption. The health system called the agreement a positive outcome, emphasizing the importance of reliable healthcare options in the community.

Cardiac Care Remains Accessible

The inclusion of The Chattanooga Heart Institute in the deal is especially significant. Heart patients often maintain long-term relationships with their cardiologists. Keeping this institute in-network ensures those relationships stay intact. Moreover, treatment timelines for cardiac conditions are time-sensitive — avoiding a provider switch protects both clinical outcomes and patient wellbeing.

No Billing Surprises

Because the deal is retroactive to February 1, patients who visited CommonSpirit facilities during the dispute period will not face unexpected out-of-network billing. This retroactive protection removes a major financial concern for families who continued seeking care despite the coverage uncertainty.

What Cigna Members Should Do Next

Even with the agreement in place, patients should take a few proactive steps.

Verify your plan type. The deal applies specifically to Cigna employer-sponsored Open Access and LocalPlus plans. Members on other plan types should confirm coverage directly with Cigna.

Review any claims from February onward. If you received care at a CommonSpirit facility after February 1 and your claim was processed as out-of-network, contact Cigna to request reprocessing under in-network terms.

Contact Cigna’s support line. Cigna customer service advocates are available 24/7 to help patients navigate in-network care options and address any billing concerns.

CommonSpirit’s Long-Term Commitment

This agreement is not just a short-term fix. CommonSpirit and Cigna finalized a two-year deal, providing a meaningful window of stability for patients, employers, and providers alike.

About CommonSpirit Health

Chicago-based CommonSpirit has been the parent company of Memorial since 2019, when Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives merged to form a large nonprofit Catholic health system. The system operates more than 2,300 care sites and 138 hospitals across the United States. Its Chattanooga footprint includes multiple clinics and three hospitals, making this agreement especially significant for the local healthcare landscape.

The two-year term gives both sides time to build a more stable long-term relationship — one that balances fair reimbursement rates with affordable premiums for Chattanooga-area families. For now, patients can focus on their health rather than their insurance paperwork.
