Ambience Healthcare’s AI Tool Transforms Nursing Care

Ambience

What Is Chart Chat for Nursing?

Ambience Healthcare launched Chart Chat for Nursing on April 1, 2026. It is the first EHR-integrated conversational AI tool built specifically for inpatient nursing workflows. Unlike general-purpose AI assistants, this tool lives directly inside the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Nurses do not need to switch between platforms or open separate applications. Instead, they ask plain-language questions and receive instant, citation-backed answers.

Ambience developed the tool alongside frontline inpatient nurses and nursing informatics teams. That collaborative design process ensures the tool addresses real clinical needs — not theoretical ones. Furthermore, Chart Chat for Nursing is the opening step in Ambience’s broader, purpose-built nursing technology roadmap.

The Problem It Solves

Documentation Eats Nursing Time

Inpatient nurses serve as the central coordinators of patient care. They synthesize data from physicians, lab systems, pharmacists, and multiple other contributors. However, accessing that information is far from simple. Nurses routinely conduct what the industry calls a “chart dive” — manually clicking through dozens of progress notes, scattered lab results, and buried orders inside the EHR.

Studies show this process consumes up to 41% of a nurse’s time in complex care settings. That is time taken away from direct patient contact. Moreover, the problem worsens during shift handovers, where understanding a patient’s full history quickly is critical.

Burnout and Nursing Shortages Drive Urgency

Healthcare systems across the US face a growing nursing shortage. Burnout is a key driver. Administrative burden — particularly documentation — ranks among nurses’ top complaints. Therefore, tools that reduce non-clinical workload are no longer optional. They are a strategic priority for health systems seeking to retain staff and protect patient outcomes.

How the AI Tool Works Inside the EHR

Plain-Language Queries, Instant Answers

Chart Chat for Nursing allows nurses to type or speak plain-language questions directly within the EHR. For example, instead of spending 15 minutes piecing together a complex patient’s history during shift change, a nurse can simply ask: “What medications did this patient receive overnight?” or “Are there any abnormal lab results from the past 24 hours?”

The AI pulls answers from physician progress notes, hospital policy documents, clinical orders, and recent lab results — all in seconds. Additionally, every response includes full source citations. Nurses can trace each answer back to the original note, order, or lab result. This transparency supports clinical accountability.

Designed for the Critical Upstream Moment

Ambience specifically designed Chart Chat for Nursing to support what it calls the “critical upstream moment” — the period before documentation and care planning begin. Nurses need a complete, accurate picture of each patient before they can write notes or coordinate care effectively. Consequently, giving nurses faster access to that picture improves both efficiency and safety.

Built-In Safety Architecture

Three Tiers of Protection

Ambience built Chart Chat for Nursing with patient safety at the center. All responses pass through a three-tier safety architecture:

  • Standard evaluations conducted during deployment
  • Real-time response quality monitoring during active use
  • Continuous nurse-in-the-loop feedback for ongoing improvement

No Hallucinations Tolerated

Critically, the system is designed to prevent AI hallucinations. If the AI cannot find an answer in the chart, it explicitly states that it does not know — rather than generating a confident-sounding guess. Every AI-generated response pairs with direct source citations so nurses can verify the information independently.

Cleveland Clinic Pilots the Technology

Cleveland Clinic is the first health system to pilot Chart Chat for Nursing. The partnership is significant. Cleveland Clinic recently selected Ambience for a large enterprise-wide AI documentation rollout. Its nursing informatics team is also actively shaping the next capabilities on Ambience’s nursing roadmap.

The pilot gives Ambience real-world feedback from one of the nation’s most recognized health systems. Furthermore, it signals that large, complex hospital networks see genuine value in nursing-specific AI — not just physician-facing documentation tools.

What This Means for Nursing’s Future

AI as a Care Enabler, Not a Replacement

Chart Chat for Nursing does not replace clinical judgment. Rather, it eliminates the friction that delays that judgment. Nurses still interpret information, make care decisions, and deliver hands-on treatment. The AI simply gets them to the right information faster.

As nursing practice models continue to evolve, conversational AI tools within the EHR will become standard infrastructure. Real-time chart querying will allow nurses to make faster, more informed decisions. Ultimately, that means better patient outcomes — particularly in high-acuity, time-sensitive environments.

A Roadmap, Not a One-Time Launch

Ambience positions Chart Chat for Nursing as step one of a larger strategy. Every future capability will be built alongside frontline nurses and nursing leaders. This co-development model increases the likelihood that tools will address real workflow challenges — and earn adoption on the floor.
