Pittsburgh-based healthcare provider UPMC is exploring ways to use technology and AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance patient care efficiency and personalization. UPMC is trialing AI-powered transcription technology, ‘digital twinning’ technology, and a system that identifies eligible patients for clinical trials by analyzing their medical records. UPMC is prioritizing patient privacy and security and will only deploy solutions when it is confident they can be safely used to offer accurate, helpful, and secure information.
UPMC, a healthcare provider based in Pittsburgh, is exploring the integration of technology and AI tools such as ChatGPT to improve patient care efficiency and personalization. Chris Carmody, the chief technology officer at UPMC, said the healthcare system is exploring ways to use AI to connect patients to clinical trials.
“We’re exploring ways that AI could help connect patients to clinical trials,” Mr. Carmody said in an April 11 press release from UPMC. “We’re working on a system that would read and analyze patients’ electronic medical records, then offer the care team a list of clinical trials they might qualify for.” Then it’s up to the clinicians to discuss options with the patient.”
Clinical trials are essential for the creation of new therapies and medications, and facilitating patient participation can have a big impact on the efficiency and speed of the study. By using AI to identify eligible patients, UPMC hopes to make it easier for clinicians to connect patients with clinical trials and improve the speed and accuracy of the selection process.

“We call it a ‘digital twin’ because the technology allows clinicians to create a model of the patient with all the same demographics, health conditions, and medications,” Mr. Carmody said. “With this model, the care team would be able to adjust medications or other treatments and see potential outcomes or side effects.” It would allow clinicians to test new treatment plans before enacting them so they can determine the best way forward.”
The use of digital twin technology can help healthcare providers create more personalized treatment plans that take into account each patient’s unique circumstances. By using the digital twin to test different treatment options, clinicians can identify the most effective approach before implementing it, reducing the risk of adverse reactions and improving patient outcomes.
Despite the benefits of AI and technology in healthcare, Mr. Carmody emphasized that UPMC will only roll out solutions that prioritize patient security and privacy.
“We’ll roll out a solution only when we’re confident that it can be used safely, and our clinicians and patients get accurate, helpful, and secure information every time,” said Mr. Carmody.
