HCA Healthcare has partnered with Augmedix to develop AI-enabled ambient documentation solutions for acute care providers. The technology will use automatic speech recognition and natural language processing to convert clinician-patient conversations into medical notes, reduce clinician burnout and improve care delivery. The partnership will pilot the technology in the emergency departments of two hospitals and will expand to two additional hospitals. HCA Healthcare will also make a financial investment in Augmedix to advance research and development efforts in fully automated ambient documentation products for acute care.
HCA Healthcare has partnered with Augmedix to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled ambient documentation solutions for acute care providers. These solutions will use automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology and natural language processing (NLP) to convert clinician-patient conversations into medical notes. Care teams will then review and finalize the notes before they are integrated into patient electronic health records (EHRs).
Documentation and administrative tasks can contribute significantly to clinician burnout. Therefore, healthcare organizations have been prioritizing EHR optimization and clinical documentation improvement to reduce clinician burnout. HCA Healthcare will pilot Augmedix’s ASR- and NLP-based documentation solutions in the emergency departments (EDs) of two hospitals. The pilot will then expand to two additional hospitals.
Ambient clinical intelligence solutions could significantly streamline documentation and improve care delivery in the EHR industry. The partnership aims to develop these technologies further, revolutionizing the way documentation occurs at the point of care. HCA Healthcare prioritizes working with clinicians to develop and deploy advanced technologies into patient care. During the pilot, the health system will gather clinician, nurse, and patient feedback on the project to help determine potential use cases for Augmedix’s offerings at other HCA Healthcare facilities.
Under the partnership, HCA Healthcare will also make a financial investment in Augmedix. The investment will advance the company’s research and development efforts in fully automated ambient documentation products for the complex acute care setting.
The healthcare industry has been turning to AI solutions to mitigate clinician burnout, ease the documentation burden, and help clinicians spend more time on patient care. Open Door Family Medical Center, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in New York, successfully adopted an AI-based EHR documentation service last year to alleviate clinician burnout after losing on-site scribing services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
