Microsoft and Canary Speech have joined forces in a partnership aimed at advancing AI-enabled speech analysis. Canary Speech, a Utah-based company specializing in speech analysis software, will leverage Microsoft’s AI technology to expand its machine learning speech models, with a particular focus on the healthcare sector.
Canary Speech’s vocal biomarker technology captures and analyzes speech data to identify any irregularities. The company claims that its technology can detect mood, stress, and energy levels before clinical screenings and noticeable symptoms, potentially enhancing telemedicine and remote medical services.
Under this collaboration, Canary will become a co-sell partner of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare and harness Microsoft’s AI capabilities to accelerate speech analysis technology. The goal is to reduce healthcare costs, address mental health challenges, and scale remote patient monitoring solutions.
To reach new customers, Canary will also utilize Microsoft Azure to expand its machine-learning speech models. Furthermore, Canary’s API platform has been integrated into Microsoft Teams.
Dr. David Rhew, global chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare at Microsoft, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the transformative potential of AI in healthcare. He noted that Canary Speech’s application of AI to enable voice as a biometric has the potential to aid in medical condition screening and monitoring, ultimately positively impacting the industry and patient outcomes.
This collaboration aligns with Microsoft’s previous endeavors in the healthcare industry, including its acquisition of Nuance Communications, a provider of AI and speech recognition software. Microsoft’s investments in OpenAI and its AI language models, such as GPT-4, further demonstrate the company’s commitment to leveraging AI for healthcare applications.
Additionally, Microsoft’s involvement in the Speech Accessibility Project, alongside tech giants Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Google, underscores its dedication to expanding speech capabilities for individuals with disabilities by using machine learning models trained on diverse speech patterns.
The partnership between Microsoft and Canary Speech represents a significant step forward in utilizing AI-enabled speech analysis to revolutionize healthcare and improve patient outcomes.
