Teladoc Health and Microsoft have announced an expanded partnership to enhance the virtual care experience. The collaboration involves integrating Microsoft’s advanced AI capabilities, including GPT4, into Teladoc Health’s platform for automated clinical documentation during virtual visits.
Teladoc Health, a leading telehealth platform, aims to streamline the process of creating clinical documentation by leveraging Microsoft’s AI solutions. The integration will utilize Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Cognitive Services, and Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX), a conversational and ambient clinical documentation solution. These technologies will be incorporated into Teladoc Health Solo, an enterprise platform that seamlessly integrates virtual care with existing IT systems.
In addition, Teladoc Health Medical Group will implement Nuance DAX Express for its telehealth visits. DAX Express is an AI-powered clinical documentation application that combines the capabilities of Nuance and OpenAI’s GPT4 within the Azure OpenAI Service. This integration enables efficient coordination of care by facilitating the transfer of documentation to other healthcare providers.
The announcement of this extended partnership has resulted in a surge in Teladoc Health’s stock value. Dr. Vidya Raman-Tangella, Chief Medical Officer at Teladoc Health, emphasized the importance of using AI to alleviate administrative burdens and staff shortages, ultimately fostering stronger doctor-patient relationships.
This collaboration builds upon the initial partnership between Teladoc and Microsoft announced in 2021, which aimed to streamline telehealth technology and administrative processes through the integration of Solo within the Microsoft Teams environment for health systems and hospitals.
In the same year, Microsoft acquired Nuance, a conversational AI and ambient clinical intelligence platform, in a cash transaction worth $19.7 billion. As part of this acquisition, Nuance introduced Dragon Ambient eXperience Express, a clinical documentation tool that incorporates OpenAI’s GPT-4, the latest version of their AI language model.
Lastly, a recent federal court ruling dismissed a securities class-action lawsuit filed against Teladoc Health in 2022. The lawsuit pertained to Teladoc’s merger with chronic care platform Livongo, alleging that the company misled investors about the challenges involved in integrating Livongo and artificially inflated the stock price during the period between February 2021 and July 2022.
