The Symposium, orchestrated by Symposium Program Chair and newly-elected SBI President Mary “Mimi” Newell, MD, FSBI, marked the organization’s first in-person gathering in four years. Newell, who also holds the position of Assistant Director of Breast Imaging and Professor at Emory University School of Medicine, emphasized the Symposium’s purpose: to address scientific data and expert strategies for addressing workplace challenges in a dynamically evolving society, as well as the role of radiologists in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Symposium’s agenda encompassed topics related to organizational processes, practice-level infrastructure, and personal reflection for radiologists, as highlighted in the SBI Symposium online summary.
The event was inaugurated by Martin Yaffe, Ph.D., FSBI, CM, FRSC, who delivered a presentation exploring significant historical trials in breast cancer screening and the substantial progress achieved so far, with a forward-looking approach to emerging science and technology.
The keynote speech, titled “Insights on the In Situs,” was presented by Jame Abraham, MD, FACP, a professor at the Cleveland Clinic College of Medicine, affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic.
Throughout the Symposium, sessions delved into the realm of breast imaging science, the evolving role of artificial intelligence, matters of health equity, as well as the essential themes of diversity and inclusion.
Linda Moy, MD, FSBI, a Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, NYU Langone Health, shared invaluable insights and pragmatic guidance on the integration of breast imaging AI. She assisted participants in understanding how to seamlessly incorporate this technology into screening workflows and underscored the significance of evaluating the suitability of these tools for individual practices.
Furthermore, the Symposium offered a comprehensive overview of forthcoming updates to the ACR BI-RADS Atlas, presented by Wendy DeMartini, MD, Stamatia Destounis, MD, and Jessice Leung, MD.
