This month, HIMSS has been shining a spotlight on the recent recipients of the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence, recognizing healthcare systems for their inventive and thoughtful utilization of information and technology to drive improved patient outcomes and promote population health. The four winners for 2023 are as follows:
Stanford Medicine
Based in Palo Alto, California, Stanford Medicine has presented three case studies illustrating their utilization of artificial intelligence and telehealth to offer patients in diverse care settings more timely and superior access to healthcare. The case studies encompass:
– Employing AI and Collaborative Workflows for the Prediction and Prevention of Clinical Deterioration
– Harnessing Machine Learning, EHR Design, and Reporting to Enhance Advance Care Planning Conversations for Patients with Serious Illness
– Converting the ED Fast Track into a Virtual Visit Path to Reduce Emergency Department Length of Stay
Dr. Michael Pfeffer, Chief Health Information Officer at Stanford Medicine, expressed, “Receiving the HIMSS Davies Award is an immense honor, reflecting the successful collaborations within Stanford Health Care that allow health information technology to revolutionize patient care. I am tremendously proud of our healthcare information technology professionals who continuously push the boundaries of IT through collaborative and innovative thinking, driven by their dedication to our mission.”
Saint Luke’s University Health Network
Saint Luke’s, headquartered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has been recognized for the third time for its endeavors to establish a data-driven governance structure that identifies new avenues for enhanced care processes and sustainable improvements in care outcomes. Their accomplishments acknowledged by the Davies Award include advancements in antimicrobial stewardship, the establishment of an on-site testing platform to manage surges in COVID-19 cases, and the optimization of advanced care planning for patients grappling with advanced chronic kidney disease. The focuses of SLUHN’s work that gained recognition are:
– Amp It Up (depicting efforts to construct a high-throughput COVID-19 testing platform)
– Antimicrobial Stewardship: Longitudinal Outcomes of Performance Enhancement
– Advanced Care Planning for Nephrology Patients
Chad Brisendine, Chief Information Officer at Saint Luke’s, remarked, “We are honored and proud to be one of only three hospital systems in the nation to secure the HIMSS Davies Award on three occasions. Our innovative team continues to leverage clinical data from St. Luke’s to elevate care quality and the well-being of our patients. The ongoing efforts of this team advance our mission to enhance the health and welfare of the people and communities entrusted to our care.”
Mackenzie Health
Mackenzie Health, headquartered in Ontario, is the initial hospital outside the United States and the exclusive Canadian hospital to be honored with a Davies Award for the second time. Their case studies showcase the creation of a coordinated digital response to the pandemic via remote patient monitoring and advanced analytics. The case studies are as follows:
– Accomplishing Medication Reconciliation in an Acute Care Environment
– Preventing Hospitalization through a Streamlined Remote Monitoring Program
– Mackenzie Health’s Effective COVID-19 Response
Purvi Desai, Digital Health and Chief Information Officer stated, “We take pride in receiving the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for the second time, spotlighting how we are revolutionizing healthcare innovation across the sector at Mackenzie Health. The innovations we are introducing in healthcare delivery through remote monitoring programs, improved medication administration processes, and our handling of the pandemic are leading to better outcomes for our patients.”
China Medical University Hospital
In Taichung City, Taiwan, China Medical University Hospital stands as the first Taiwanese provider to attain the Davies Award. HIMSS has recognized them for their use of AI-assisted diagnostic and risk assessment tools to enhance diverse clinical scenarios. China Medical University Hospital submitted three case studies:
– AI-assisted STEMI Triage System from Ambulance to Emergency Room
– AI-driven Lung Protective Strategy in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Patients
– Development of a Comprehensive Intelligent Anti-Microbial System: A Revolutionary, Swift, and Digitally Precise Prediction of Therapeutic Antibiotics
Dr. Der-Yang Cho, Superintendent of China Medical University Hospital, shared, “We are honored to be the inaugural recipient of the Davies Award in Taiwan. CMUH amalgamates medical data to design predictive tools that aid clinicians in refining care processes. Through our journey of digital transformation, we are saving more patients and enhancing their quality of life.”
