Orion Health has recently introduced a cutting-edge digital front door technology called Virtuoso, aimed at seamlessly integrating health system data into a unified healthcare platform. Already in use by 15 million individuals in Ontario, this service is set to become more widely accessible soon. Virtuoso is designed to streamline healthcare processes and alleviate the workload on healthcare professionals, ultimately reducing the reliance on emergency departments.
Virtuoso, often referred to as a multichannel interface, serves as a single point of contact for patients within the healthcare system. It encompasses a symptom-assessment tool that employs artificial intelligence to guide users toward more personalized information and advice regarding available healthcare options.
Brad Porter, the Global CEO of Orion Health, emphasized that Virtuoso isn’t just another patient portal but a tailored, community-specific, highly accessible platform. It seamlessly integrates complex healthcare systems, empowering individuals to take control of their health.
Orion Health, based in New Zealand, combines existing technologies like electronic health records with patient portals and other systems on its unified health information exchange platform. The consumer-facing aspect of this platform enables users to access their health information and utilize various self-service features.
Dr. Chris Hobson, Orion Health’s Chief Medical Officer, highlighted how digital front-door technology can reduce the burden on healthcare workers by shifting care to patients’ homes or community clinics, allowing clinicians to focus on tasks that require their expertise. This technology aims to modernize healthcare, moving away from traditional waiting rooms, routine questions, and paper-based prescriptions.
In addition to its core features, the Virtuoso platform offers various healthcare navigation services, such as an accredited health knowledge hub, a verified medical library, an accredited health services directory, access to digital health records, translation services, a website or mobile app, 24/7 online chat, a nurse-led call center, virtual consultations, health service navigation support, wellness support and groups, feedback forms and surveys, appointment booking and scheduling, insurance coverage checks, and payment gateways.
Orion Health underwent a significant transformation after a financial downturn in 2019. The company shifted its focus to innovation and adopted a startup-like structure to regain profitability. Before the pandemic, Orion Health began developing tailored, community-specific health information exchange platforms for state and territory health departments in Australia.
James Rice, Orion Health’s Executive Vice President of North America, noted that hospitals worldwide are grappling with overload, outdated processes, and care occurring in inappropriate locations. The introduction of technologies like Virtuoso aims to alleviate the strain on healthcare practitioners and ensure patients receive care in more suitable settings.
