The ChatGPT Health experience enables users to connect various health data sources including electronic medical records from U.S. healthcare providers, Apple Health fitness and activity tracking data, Function laboratory testing results, MyFitnessPal nutrition and diet information, Weight Watchers weight management tracking, AllTrails outdoor activity and exercise data, Instacart food purchasing patterns, and Peloton workout history and fitness metrics.

OpenAI CEO of Applications Fidji Simo shared a personal anecdote illustrating ChatGPT Health’s potential value during a press preview. After being hospitalized for a kidney stone that developed into an infection, a resident physician prescribed a standard antibiotic. Simo checked the medication against her medical history in ChatGPT, which flagged that the antibiotic could reactivate a serious life-threatening infection she had suffered previously. “The resident was relieved I spoke up, she told me she only has a few minutes per patient during rounds, and that health records aren’t organized in a way that makes it easy to see,” Simo explained.

ChatGPT Health operates as a separate, isolated space within the broader ChatGPT platform, implementing multiple layers of privacy protection specifically designed for sensitive health information. This strategic partnership provides ChatGPT Health with access to b.well’s extensive health data network designed to support consumer-mediated access to clinical information.

The b.well network connects to more than 2.2 million healthcare providers, 320 health insurance plans, laboratory testing facilities, and other health data sources across the United States. Built on FHIR-based (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) application programming interfaces and trusted healthcare exchange frameworks, the infrastructure maintains strict controls around identity verification, user consent management, data security protocols, and transaction auditability.

Through this collaboration, users can explicitly authorize ChatGPT to securely connect with their health data and medical records from participating U.S. healthcare providers. The consent-based architecture ensures users maintain control over what health information ChatGPT can access, with the ability to revoke permissions at any time.

The partnership reflects OpenAI’s recognition that building comprehensive health data connectivity infrastructure requires specialized expertise in healthcare information exchange, regulatory compliance, and provider integration that extends beyond OpenAI’s core AI development capabilities.

ChatGPT for Healthcare is built on GPT-5 models specifically configured for healthcare workflows and evaluated through physician-led testing. The enterprise platform offers evidence retrieval with transparent citations drawing from millions of peer-reviewed research studies, public health guidance, and clinical guidelines, role-based access controls and organization-wide user management supporting secure deployment, Business Associate Agreements (BAA) with OpenAI supporting HIPAA-compliant use, customer-managed encryption keys and data residency options, and audit logging capabilities for compliance documentation.
